Each year, we organise a considerable number of events to strengthen and deepen our network. We also take an active part in quite a few activities of other organisations. The ultimate goal is always the same: providing inspiration for innovation. We are convinced that networking can help to bridge the gap between research and innovation. That is why we encourage mutual contacts between companies and the exchanging of ideas on hot topics for the industry. We also share our research results in various domains, preferably with as many professional experts as possible, and we want to stay abreast of everything that is going on within our areas of expertise. In this way, we can anticipate new innovation requirements sooner and better.
With these motives in mind, we organised in 2016 a total of 12 Flanders Make events.
- Seminar: increasing the efficiency of rotating machines and vehicle drivetrains, Leuven, 13 January 2016
- Seminar: model-based functional engineering, Affligem, 2 February 2016
- Seminar: improving systems engineering of mechatronic systems, Leuven, 3 March 2016
- Workshop: non-destructive testing of adhesive bonding, Saarbrücken, 10 March 2016
- Event: The Manufacturers (in a partnership with UNIZO), Leuven, 24 March 2016
- Technological trade mission: vehicle of the future, Graz, 23-26 May 2016
- Flanders Make members event, Volvo Truck, Oostakker, 2 June 2016
- Day of the Manufacturing Industry, OMC Turnhout, 16 June 2016
- Flanders Make seminar event, Edegem, 29 September 2016
- Voka Industry 4.0 roadshow: Vehicle of the Future, Lommel, 21 October 2016
- Flanders Make symposium, Mechelen, 22 November 2016
- Inspiration session: Growing as SME in Antwerp and Flemish Brabant, 1 December 2016
Meanwhile, some of these events have earned a permanent place on our calendar. Below, you’ll find more information on a few initiatives.
Every year, Flanders Make organises a networking event for its members. This always takes place at a member company, which is then given the opportunity to introduce its business through a presentation and a guided tour. Innovation is the common thread here. In the spring of 2016, Volvo Truck was our host. For Flanders Make, this is also an excellent opportunity to inform the members about its activities.
Seminars and workshops
In 2016, Flanders Make chose to optimise all its initiatives and, insofar as possible and desirable, bring them together. In this way, every target group is given the opportunity to stay up-to-date in various research domains, in 1 day and on 1 location.
Networking events for SMEs
Flanders Make also organises networking events focussing on innovation for SMEs from the manufacturing industry. These events are an ideal opportunity for first introductions as well as a potential source of inspiration for business managers. We hope that, in the long run, we can encourage them to embrace innovation and to participate in our open research projects. In 2016, Flanders Make organised 2 such events for establishing contacts with companies based in Antwerp and Flemish Brabant. 1 of them was organized in consultation with the respective innovation centre and 1 in cooperation with the Open Manufacturing Campus (OMC).
In November 2016, Flanders Make organised its first annual symposium. Our ambition? Turning this symposium into the main event for the Flemish manufacturing industry.
More than 300 interested people from the industry, knowledge centres and public agencies attended the first edition. They came to share their expertise on issues that are relevant and topical for the wider manufacturing industry and to talk about their most valuable innovation-related cases. Of course, Flanders Make also highlighted its own expertise and research results. Besides, during the network breaks, lunch and dinner, participants could attend demonstrations. It is our ambition to organise this event on an annual basis, inviting top keynote speakers from both the business and academic world.

Participation in external events
Obviously, Flanders Make also attends local and international events of other organisations (including seminars, conferences and trade fairs) to give presentations and demonstrations. During such events, we not only explain the project results of our strategic research domains but also the technological benefits for the entire industry. Furthermore, we acted in 2016 as host during external events (including ‘The Manufacturers’, organised by Unizo and the Voka Industry 4.0 roadshow) and assumed chairmanship for one day within the theme “Autonomous Driving” at the Bits & Chips Smart Systems fair.
