Tool for optimising the design of a bike-carrier
Flanders Make has developed a tool allowing to optimise the location and geometry of local reinforcements so as to create hollow structures with maximum stiffness and/or minimum weight. Thule used this tool to design a bike-carrier with improved stiffness, keeping or even reducing the weight of the product.
The tool made it possible to identify promising designs for the structural reinforcement concept (tube-in-tube). Further fine-tuning was possible thanks to the finite element (FE) calculation executed by Flanders Make. Meanwhile, a first prototype of the optimised bike-carrier has been built and tested. This confirmed the results of the simulation. In 2018, the structural reinforcement concept (tube-in-tube) will be introduced in a model update of the bike-carrier.
