Implementation of foam in hollow structures in buses

Flanders Make developed an assessment tool for foam-based structural reinforcements. This required a great deal of experimental and virtual research into the effect of such reinforcements on the mechanical performances of hollow structures (both static and in terms of impact).

Together with Flanders Make, Siemens Industry Software and Voxdale, VDL used this tool to develop an optimised roll-over protection structure for a bus (optimised in terms of weight, cost and energy absorption). However, it appeared that the geometry and choice of materials were still open for improvement. At the moment, simulations of the complete bus with the integrated concept for the new reinforced roll-over bars are in progress. If the results are positive, the new concept will be implemented in existing bus models.
